“Pubs and restaurants in the Westcountry which buy venison at the back door with “no questions asked” are fuelling a cruel and dangerous crime wave, a seminar on poaching has been told.
Exmoor veterinary surgeon Peter Green, who specialises in deer welfare, said every diner eating a venison meal should ask the pub landlord or restaurant owner where the meat had come from.
And he warned: “There are public health issues with carcasses from poachers that have been handled badly – bacteria from the gut could be present on the meat, causing food poisoning.”
