“Police Scotland is appealing to Midlothian communities to report incidences of hare coursing.
Local wildlife liaison officer PC Hannah Medley said this was a popular time for the illegal sport as hares had nowhere to hide in stubble fields.
Individuals set up a beating line with their dogs to flush out hares.
Once the hare is spotted the dogs are released.
“Some people do it purely as a means of exercising their dogs, others bet to see whose dog is fastest and others do it for the blood lust,” she added. Operation Lepus is urging rural residents to report any suspicious activity or vehicles by contacting 101.”
