PAW UK

The Steering Group consists of representatives of the Police, UKBA, Defra, Home Office, Natural Resources Wales, Scottish Natural Heritage, Joint Nature Conservation Committee, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Welsh Government, Department of Acgriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA NI), amongst other SNCO’S and NGO’s. The Steering Group meets twice every year to co-ordinate the Partnership’s activities, and to determine its priorities. It sets up Working Groups to take forward work on particular issues, and appoints a Co-ordinator to lead each Working Group. The co-ordinator of each Working Group may also attend the Steering Group. The Steering Group meeting takes place after each UK TCG, where the UK Tactical Assessment is discussed.

The flow chart below has been compiled by the PAW secretariat and illustrates the structure a little clearer. PAW UK’s Steering Group sets the overarching objectives for tackling wildlife crime. It encourages, challenges and co-ordinates members’ actions to deliver outputs which help meet those objectives. The Steering Group is jointly chaired by Defra and the ACPO lead for wildlife crime.

There are also a number of PAW working groups who report to the steering group:

  • Forensics Working Group
  • Publicity Working Group

In addition, there are three country groups (Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) who aim to develop initiatives which are specifically tailored to meet their own country issues and concerns, particularly following the devolution of certain wildlife controls. All country groups are subsidiaries of UK PAW and participate actively in its national activities.

    PAW

    The Partnership for Action Against Wildlife Crime (PAW) is a multi-agency body comprising representatives of the organisations involved in wildlife law enforcement in the UK.

    It provides opportunities for statutory and non-Government organisations to work together to combat wildlife crime.

  • The NWCU & PAW

    To make the enforcement of wildlife law more effective, wildlife crime priorities are set every two years by the UK Wildlife Crime Tasking and Co-ordination Group and supported by the Wildlife Crime Conservation Advisory Group which is chaired by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee. The NWCU produces a strategic assessment of wildlife crime every two years which is used by the Tasking and Co-ordination Group to set the wildlife crime priorities. The NWCU’s remit also extends to the dissemination of information from a wide range of organisations by assisting police forces in wildlife crime investigation.
